Food Services Department earns Child Hunger Hero Silver award
Congratulations to the Deer Lakes Food Services Department which recently earned the Child Hunger Hero Silver award!
“I am extremely proud of this Food Service Department for continuing to go above and beyond to combat food insecurity and to provide healthy nutritious meals to our students,” Jacob Douglas, Director of Food Services, said.
The Child Hunger Hero award program recognizes school districts and community partners that make "outstanding contributions to food security for kids," in the region serviced by the Greater Pittsburgh Community Food Bank. Four districts were awarded gold, and Deer Lakes was the only Allegheny County district awarded silver.
Participating schools and community sponsors are evaluated on their involvement in programs impacting childhood food insecurity.
The Deer Lakes School District aims to provide nutritious and appetizing meals to students each day and recognizes that good nutrition is vital to students’ health, their mental and physical growth, and their readiness to participate and learn at school.
Similarly, Greater Pittsburgh Community Food Bank "makes childhood hunger a priority area because kids need adequate nutrition to eat, learn and grow."
